«Getötet, weil wir Kurden sind»
Die Vernichtung von über 182 000 Kurden soll von der internationalen Staatengemeinschaft als Genozid anerkannt werden. Dies forderten Parlamentarier verschiedener Länder 25 Jahre nach dem Massaker von Halabdscha.

Halabdscha. – Als die irakische Luftwaffe am 16-03- 1988 Halabdscha mit Giftgas bombardierte, hütete Massoud seine Ziegenherde ausserhalb der Stadt. Er überlebte. Zwei Tage nach dem Massaker begleitete uns der junge Kurde durch das Inferno. «Vier Stunden», schrieb der Korrespondent der «Südostschweiz» damals, «stolperten wir, dem Erbrechen und Heulen nahe, durch Halabdscha. Wir sahen die entstellten Gesichter von Babys auf den Rücken ihrer zusammengebrochenen Mütter, Familien, die beim Mittagessen das tödliche Gas eingeatmet hatten und qualvoll daran erstickten. Die aufgedunsenen Leichen lagen vor Kaffeehäusern, neben Tierkadavern. Auch die Vögel waren tot vom Himmel gefallen. Fast niemand konnte dem Tod entrinnen.»

Schlimmster Giftgasangriff seit 1945
Die Angriffe auf Halabdscha, bei denen 5000 Menschen ums Leben kamen, gelten als die schlimmsten Giftgasattacken seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die verheerenden Bombardements waren gleichzeitig der traurige Höhepunkt der langen Serie von Militäroperationen, zu denen auch die systematische Zerstörung von mehr als 5000 kurdischen Dörfern sowie die Deportation Zehntausender kurdischer Zivilisten in den Süd-Irak gehörten. Schätzungen zufolge sind mehr als 180 000 Menschen der von Saddam Husseins Cousin Ali Hassan el Madschid geleiteten «Anfal-Kampagne» zum Opfer gefallen.
Tausende leiden noch heute unter Asthma und anderen Atemwegserkrankungen, Nervenlähmungen oder sind an Leukämie und anderen Krebsarten erkrankt. Die Frauen von Halabdscha bringen missgebildete und geistig behinderte Babys zur Welt. «Wir wurden getötet, weil wir Kurden sind», betont Kamal Ketuly. Der Chemieprofessor war am Samstag nach Halabdscha gekommen, um mit Zehntausenden von Kurden sowie Politikern aus allen Teilen der Welt an das vor genau 25 Jahren begangene Kriegsverbrechen zu erinnern.
«Wir müssen uns im Klaren darüber sein, dass Saddam uns vernichten wollte», sagt der Akademiker mit leiser Stimme. Der Diktator habe nichts dem Zufall überlassen: «Die über Halabdscha abgeworfenen Giftgascocktails enthielten Zyanid, mit dem Hitler Millionen von Juden umbrachte, Nervengas, das zur Lähmung des Herzmuskels führte, sowie Senfgas, das über die Atemwege wirkt.» «Die Zutaten zur Herstellung der tödlichen Waffen erhielt Saddam Hussein von westlichen Firmen», erinnert der Bürgermeister von Halabdscha. Dennoch habe es die internationale Staatengemeinschaft bis heute nicht für nötig gehalten, die Vernichtung von 182 000 Kurden als Genozid anzuerkennen. «Nur wenn wir den Völkermord an den Kurden anerkennen, können wir sicher sein, dass sich solche Verbrechen niemals wiederholen», forderten am Samstag Parlamentarier aus Norwegen, Grossbritanien und Schweden.

Syrien droht ein weiteres Halabdscha
Der ehemalige französische Aussenminister, Bernard Kouchner, ging noch einen Schritt weiter. Der Westen habe noch immer «die Verantwortung zum Schutz der Kurden». Das im Völkerrecht verankerte Konzept zum Schutz des Menschen vor schweren Menschenrechtsverletzungen gelte aber auch für Syrien, wo Hunderte von Tonnen chemischer Kampfstoffe lagerten. Sollten diese Waffen zum Einsatz kommen, könnten sich Verbrechen wie Halabdscha schon morgen wiederholen. Der Westen müsse daher unverzüglich handeln.[1]
