ERBIL — The historic landscape of the Kurdish region of Hawraman in Iranian Kurdistan has been listed as the world heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The organization made the announcement on Tuesday, July 27, saying Hawraman or Uraman was inscribed in its list of world heritages alongside several other sites in Iran and across the globe.
Located in the province of Kordestan, northwest of Iran, Hawraman has been one of the main tourist attractions in the region. Over 500 antiquities related to the Paleolithic era have so far been discovered in this area.
The word Hawraman means “the land of sun”, as an indication to Zoroastrianism, the original religion of the Kurdish people, in which the sun is a sacred element of the universe.
One of the outstanding features of Hawraman is its rocky and mountainous landscape, which include historical villages, castles, and religious sites, with different customs and rituals.[1]
