Le Kurdistan Iranien a une surface d'environ 125 000 km2, et son territoire se prolonge du Mont Ararat Jusqu'au Sud de la chaîne montagneuse du Zagros. Les frontières turco-iraniennes et les frontières irako-iraniennes constituent en même temps celles du Kurdistan Iranien avec le Kurdistan de Turquie et le Kurdistan Irakien à l'Ouest, tandis qu'à l'Est elles avoisinent le lac d'Ourmiah -Rezaieh, c'est une région montagneuse où même les villes sont situées sur une haute altitude -plus de 1.000 m. L'altitude de Bidjar, ville du Kurdistan central, atteint 1.920 m.

Le climat est continental au Kurdistan Iranien et la quantité annuelle de pluie ne dépasse pas 400 mm, tandis que dans les vallées fertiles elle atteint 2.000 à 3.000 mm.
