Condemning the attacks on Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo, KDP President #Masoud Barzani# stated that “political disagreements must not be allowed to lead to ethnic cleansing against the Kurdish people.”
KDP President Masoud Barzani issued a statement regarding the attacks carried out by groups affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government against the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods of Aleppo. Barzani said that the conflict and violence in the region pose a serious threat to civilians and carry the danger of ethnic cleansing against the Kurdish people.
In his statement, Barzani said the following: The political changes in Syria were a good opportunity to find an appropriate solution that would safeguard the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people in Syria and resolve all issues. To this end, we made great efforts with all parties, emphasizing that all problems and disputes should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means. However, the dangerous situation currently prevailing in the city of Aleppo, with war and violence, is a major cause for concern; it threatens the lives of innocent civilians and carries the danger of ethnic cleansing against the Kurds in the region.
Barzani added: I call on the Syrian authorities not to allow political disagreements to be turned into a national (ethnic) conflict, and not to permit Kurdish citizens in the Aleppo area to be subjected to pressure, violence, displacement from their ancestral lands, and ethnic cleansing. I also call on the Kurdish parties, and especially the SDF, to do everything possible to halt the fighting and clashes and to prevent further bloodshed, and for both sides to resort to dialogue and negotiations to resolve the problems. Political disagreements must not be allowed to endanger the lives of civilians or lead to ethnic cleansing against the Kurdish people; this is a crime against humanity and would have extremely dangerous consequences.
