Born in the Musika village of Mardin in 1958, Brader’s real name is Mehmet Şerif Torun. Hozan Brader’s passion for music came from his father. He bought his first musical instrument by giving his shoes to an junk dealer. He learned to play baglama when he was only 16 years old. Hozan Brader was translating Turkish songs into Kurdish when he was little. That’s why he was sentenced to 3 and a half months in prison for making this kind of music while still in high school.
After being released from prison, he was exiled from the country in 1986 and settled in the Netherlands. Brader, who went to jail a few more times, met with some politicians while in prison and joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party. They nicknamed it “Heval Bira”. When he went to Europe, he made a song called “Brader” and the name remained Brader.
He was imprisoned several times for the cause of Kurdishness and communism. Then the September 12 Coup happened and when he realized that he could no longer live in Turkey, he went to Europe. But he could not find what he wanted there, on the contrary, it increased his pain even more. Thinking that culture, art and traditions would disappear in Europe, Brader took an interest in song and music and tried to preserve his language and culture. That’s why he always expressed the value he gave to his sedge.
Hozan Brader stated in an interview that his mother was the fourth wife of his father and that he did not have a good childhood because he grew up in a very crowded family. His father was a poet and his father’s voice was beautiful. She knew many Kurdish songs and epics. His father was really like a library to him.
Hozan Brader was also drawing pictures and dealing with articles. Hozan Brader released his first album in 1995 with the ‘Min Sare’ cassette. [1]
